THE COFFEE
High in the Tarrazú mountains, Finca Monte Alto exemplifies the precision and consistency that have made Costa Rica a benchmark for quality in Latin American coffee. Run by Gerardo and Jennifer Arias, the farm combines generational experience with a focus on detail at every stage – from selective picking through to measured drying.
The altitude, around 2,000 metres, plays a defining role: slower cherry maturation under cool mountain conditions produces dense, sugar-rich beans that translate into a structured sweetness and layered cup profile. The result is a clean, fruit-driven natural that balances intensity with composure.
THE REGION
Tarrazú remains one of Costa Rica’s most admired regions for its clarity of flavour and disciplined processing. Volcanic soils and wide temperature variation between day and night yield dense, sugar-rich cherries, ideal for nuanced naturals. The Arias family’s approach blends technical precision with respect for the environment, resulting in lots that are traceable, consistent, and representative of Tarrazú’s hallmark elegance.
THE PROCESS
This lot is naturally processed, with ripe cherries spread on raised beds to dry for 25 to 30 days. Constant turning ensures even drying and a clean fruit character. After resting and milling, the coffee is prepared for export. The medium-light roast retains the delicate fruit and inherent sweetness of the process, bringing definition and balance across both filter and lighter espresso profiles.
IN THE CUP
A layered cup showing fudge-like sweetness with caramel and butterscotch depth, lifted by a bright, pear-like acidity that gives structure and vibrancy. A soft marshmallow sweetness rounds the finish, lending a creamy, balanced texture. The lighter roast highlights the coffee’s clarity and precision – sweet, articulate, and immaculately clean, a modern interpretation of Tarrazú’s natural profile.
SPOTLIGHT LIMITED ROAST
Our spotlight, limited roast coffees are all ethically sourced from the best coffee farms and wash houses around the world. These small-batch or microlot coffees are from smaller harvests, which can not be farmed year-round. We find these rare and excellent coffees and lovingly hand roast them in small batches using our 5KG roasters, roasting daily to order for the freshest coffee possible. Due to their rareness and popularity, many of our spotlight coffees are restricted to 3 or 4 sacks only, meaning we're only able to roast 150-200KG of artisan coffee per release.
